Solar Panel Installation Rebate

Alternatively, if you do not have a pre-approved $8,000 solar panel installation grant, then rest-assured, because the old scheme has simply been replaced by a new scheme under which you can still get massive savings thanks to the government on your solar installation. The new scheme is based around solar credits.

Solar credits provide assistance to a much wider range of Australians and is not means tested. The level of support provided through the newly introduced solar credits scheme depends on the market price of REC’s (Renewable Energy Credits), along with the location and size of the system being installed. Solar credits provide a higher subsidy in sunnier locations, where there is a greater environmental benefit from solar panels, please refer to the map below as a point of reference.

Renewable energy credits are simply pieces of paper that are redeemable for a cash payment from the government. Solar Installation Government Feed-In Tariffs

Australian state governments may pay you a premium for the clean, green electricity that you generate on your roof, over and above the money you would generate by running your meter backwards. This kind of scheme is called a “Feed In Tariff”. The government is offering a premium rate, paid to producers (you), of renewable energy via your solar power system. At present there is no national feed in tariff, with the rate paid varying in each State and Territory of Australia.

When you have a grid connect solar power system (majority of residential and commercial solar panel installations), and it produces excess electricity, it’s fed back into the grid, becoming available for use by those around you. This excess electricity attracts a tariff from your State Government and is paid out to you as either a gross or net feed in tariff.

A gross feed in tariff means you are paid for all the energy you produce, including the energy you use yourself. A net feed in tariff means you are only paid for the excess energy you produce. Whether you are entitled to a gross or net feed in tariff (state/territory dependent), it’s a nice way to get something back for committing to a solar panel installation.
